To Birders of Costa Rica

Just wanted to let you know how great a birding trip my wife Deb, sister Sandra and I had in Costa Rica all because of Alfredo Scott. I contacted him via the world famous birding pal organization. Alfredo was quick to respond to my request to provide 2 days of birding around San Jose. It took only a few emails to know I had contacted someone that knew how to put on a tour.

We arranged to meet the first morning at our hotel at 7am . He was there before we were. He personally drove us to Waterfalls Park our first destination. On the way there he filled us in on the history and current issues in Costa Rica. Not only is Alfredo an excellent birder he is very knowledgeable about his country, the flora and the entire ecosystem. His guidance was outstanding. At the end of the first day he had helped us indentify 48 species of birds, most were lifers for Deb and I. Sandra is more accomplished and did not have as many lifers.

On day 2 we went on a most unbelievable mountain ride to a wonderful bird sanctuary The Savegre Lodge. Again we identified more than 30 birds with an excellent hike through mountain terrain. On the list that day was the Resplendent Quetzal. After a most impressive lunch at the lodge, we made our way back to San Jose. Again Alfredo’s knowledge of his country and ecosystem made the travel most pleasant.

We asked Alfredo to take us on a third day to the coast. Well what a day it was again. He hired a boat to take us on the Tarcoles River where we added 50 more birds to our list including the Scarlet Macaw. At the end of three days we had 101 life birds and about 40 excellent photographs of the 101.
